William Horace Gay's gravestone
|
William’s body was found floating at the sight of the YMR 207, and multiple effects were found on his person; aside from miscellaneous letters, photographs, trinkets, a CWS Insigne, cigarettes, a flashlight, and a set of dogtags, William had many smaller items. His effects were returned to his father, Gray W. Gay, along with an American flag, and his body was buried in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. William had no wife or children, and left no will.
After his untimely death, William was awarded a purple heart for his sacrifice for his country. |
