William finished four years of high school, but never went to college. After living in Vaughan, Mississippi for a small time, on September 22, 1942, William enlisted in the U.S. Army in Yazoo City and trained at Camp Shelby, Mississippi; soon after, he entered the 83rd Chemical Battalion, a unit of Company C which specialized in supportive mortar fire and was also called the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion. William left with the battalion for the European front on April 29, 1943.
